Home Insurance in Plano and Dallas-Fort Worth: Cost, Claims
Home insurance in Plano, which is mostly in Collin County, averaged $4,343 a year in 2025, about $362 a month, on an average of $569,000 of coverage, according to the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI). Dallas County averaged $4,363, Denton County $4,336 and Tarrant County (Fort Worth) $3,939. Since 2019 these premiums have risen between 85% and 104%. Behind the price is hail and wind: over 2019 to 2025 insurers paid about 1.7 times the statewide average per policy in Collin County. These are county averages of premiums actually reported, not quotes for your address.
How much does home insurance cost in Plano, Dallas and Fort Worth?

| Kaufman | Forney, Terrell | $1,755 | $3,058 | +74% | $384,000 | $7.96 |
(Change and the per-$1,000 column are our calculations from TDI’s county data. Several cities cross county lines: Plano is mostly in Collin County with a small part in Denton, and Richardson and Frisco are split between two counties, so ask the company which county your address is in.)
Three things stand out:
- Collin County has the highest coverage in the area ($569,000), so its premium per $1,000 of coverage ($7.63) is lower than Dallas County’s ($8.52). A big premium can mean a bigger house, not only a pricier county.
- Fort Worth is cheaper than Dallas: Tarrant County’s $3,939 is 10% below Dallas County’s $4,363.
- Premiums doubled in Collin and Denton counties since 2019 (+104% and +104%). The statewide picture and the reasons: home insurance in Texas, average cost by county.
What insurers paid in North Texas: hail and wind
TDI publishes what insurers paid for homeowners claims by county and cause. The table shows the paid loss per policy for each year, with the wind and hail part in parentheses, and the statewide average per policy (our calculation: total paid divided by total policies in force, from the same TDI data). TDI’s county table labels this peril “Wind”; its 2024 statewide total ($7.2 billion) matches the wind ($2.2 billion) plus hail ($4.9 billion) that the market overview reports, so we read it as wind and hail together.
| Year | Dallas | Tarrant | Collin | Denton | Texas average |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 | $2,531 ($1,994) | $1,358 ($996) | $2,843 ($2,429) | $1,180 ($765) | $1,138 |
| 2020 | $2,110 ($1,543) | $1,486 ($1,096) | $923 ($488) | $967 ($513) | $1,063 |
| 2021 | $2,460 ($709) | $3,213 ($1,880) | $2,675 ($676) | $2,829 ($1,154) | $1,899 |
| 2022 | $1,504 ($592) | $1,346 ($651) | $1,532 ($668) | $3,074 ($2,220) | $1,168 |
| 2023 | $1,927 ($903) | $1,971 ($1,153) | $3,854 ($2,896) | $2,673 ($1,683) | $1,679 |
| 2024 | $2,057 ($1,119) | $2,126 ($1,384) | $2,402 ($1,574) | $3,978 ($3,190) | $1,801 |
| 2025 | $1,765 ($885) | $2,134 ($1,420) | $3,027 ($2,247) | $2,027 ($1,294) | $1,534 |
Adding the seven years (our sum of TDI’s annual per-policy figures):
| County | Paid per policy, 2019-2025 | of which wind and hail | Wind and hail share | Times the Texas average ($10,283) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dallas | $14,354 | $7,745 | 54% | 1.4x |
| Tarrant | $13,634 | $8,580 | 63% | 1.3x |
| Collin | $17,256 | $10,978 | 64% | 1.7x |
| Denton | $16,728 | $10,819 | 65% | 1.6x |
Collin County stands out: $1,022 million paid in 2023 alone, or $3,854 per policy, and $3,027 in 2025. Denton County peaked in 2024 at $3,978 per policy. TDI’s data doesn’t name the storms. Statewide, TDI says wind and hail have made up an average of 62% of homeowners losses since 2019. In these four counties the wind and hail share of the seven-year total ranges from 54% to 65%. Premiums and losses aren’t directly comparable: a premium also covers expenses and reserves.
How to get home insurance quotes in Plano and Dallas-Fort Worth
- Compare on HelpInsure.com first. It is run by TDI and the Office of Public Insurance Counsel and shows policies sold in your area with their rates and coverage types; it says its results are informational, not a final quote.
- Ask every company for the wind and hail deductible. In North Texas it is where the money goes. Ask whether it is a dollar amount or a percentage of your coverage, and what you would pay on a hail claim. It is written on the declarations page.
- Tell them your roof. TDI lists “your home’s roof age and material” among the factors that set the price. Ask each company how the roof’s age and material change the quote, and about every discount: TDI’s examples are a home security alarm, a fire sprinkler system, bundling with other policies, and no claims in the past three years.
- Compare at the same coverage and deductibles from at least three companies, and check each company’s complaint record: home insurance companies in Texas.
- Check licenses with TDI at 800-252-3439. A home policy does not cover flood damage, TDI says; flood is a separate policy.
A hail claim: TDI says home companies can’t charge more for claims for damage from natural causes, including weather. If repair costs are close to your deductible, TDI says you may decide it isn’t worth filing.
The Texas FAIR Plan in North Texas
In North Texas the FAIR Plan, the insurer of last resort, is small compared with Houston (Harris County had 28,616 policies). TDI’s 2025 county data:
| County | FAIR Plan policies | Average FAIR premium | Average premium, all other policies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dallas | 3,012 | $3,840 | $4,363 |
| Tarrant | 2,346 | $3,867 | $3,939 |
| Collin | 405 | $5,473 | $4,343 |
| Denton | 780 | $4,248 | $4,336 |
TDI says you qualify for the FAIR Plan if two insurance companies have turned you down and no company has offered you a policy or renewal. Collin County’s FAIR average is above the private average, and Dallas County’s is below it, so it is not a discount program.
