14K gold price per gram
14K gold is 14 parts gold out of 24 — 58.3% pure — so a gram of it holds 0.583 grams of gold. Today that’s $75.60 a gram, or $117.57 per pennyweight.
How to work out what your gold is worth
- Weigh the piece in grams (a kitchen scale that reads to 0.1 g works for a rough number).
- Find the karat stamp: 10K, 14K, 18K, or the number for its purity (417, 585, 750).
- Multiply: grams × today’s price per gram for that karat.
Example: a 10-gram 14K chain holds about $756.02 of gold today. Stones, clasps of other metals and engraving don’t add gold value.
| Karat | Gold content | Common stamp |
|---|---|---|
| 24K | 100.0% | 999 |
| 22K | 91.7% | 916 |
| 18K | 75.0% | 750 |
| 14K | 58.3% | 585 |
| 10K | 41.7% | 417 |
“Gold plated” or “gold filled” isn’t solid gold
Under the Federal Trade Commission’s jewelry guides, “gold” alone means 24K; an alloy must say its karat, such as “14K gold”. Pieces marked gold plated, gold electroplate, gold filled, gold overlay or R.G.P. have only a thin layer of gold over another metal, so their gold value is a small fraction of a solid piece. For solid gold without solder, U.S. law allows a tolerance of just 3 parts per thousand below the stamped purity, per the FTC guides.
Why gold buyers pay less than this price
The figures above are the melt value at the international spot price. A buyer has to test, refine and resell the gold and make a margin, so the offer is lower — and it varies a lot from one buyer to another. Before selling:
- Ask what they pay per gram or per pennyweight for your karat, and compare it with the table.
- Have the piece weighed and tested in front of you.
- Get more than one offer.
