Gold IRA Rollover: Rules, Steps and Mistakes to Avoid

A gold IRA rollover moves money from an existing retirement account, such as a 401(k) or another IRA, into a self-directed IRA that can hold gold. The money moves first and the metal is bought afterward. You can’t roll over coins you already own: IRS Publication 590-A says IRA contributions “must be in the form of money (cash, check, or money order)” and that “property can’t be contributed.” Done as a direct rollover, nothing is withheld and it isn’t taxed. Done as a check made out to you, a retirement plan withholds 20% and you have 60 days to put the whole amount back.

How a gold IRA rollover works, step by step

  1. Open a self-directed IRA with a custodian that handles physical metals. Who can legally be one, and how to check: gold IRA custodian.
  2. Ask your current plan administrator or IRA company for a direct rollover to the new custodian. The IRS describes it this way: you ask your plan administrator to make the payment directly to another retirement plan or to an IRA. Nothing is withheld.
  3. The money arrives in the new IRA as cash. It is not gold yet.
  4. You choose the metal through a dealer, and the IRA buys it. The metal has to be eligible and held by the trustee: what gold can go in an IRA.
  5. Keep the statements from both ends and check that the amount sent equals the amount received.

Direct rollover or a check made out to you

Direct rollover Indirect (60-day) rollover
Who gets the money The new IRA custodian You
Withholding from an employer plan None 20% mandatory, even if you plan to roll it over
Deadline No 60-day clock: you never receive the money 60 days from the day you receive it
One-per-year limit (IRA to IRA) Doesn’t apply to trustee-to-trustee transfers Counts if it is IRA to IRA
Main risk Money sent to the wrong account or custodian Missing the deadline or the withheld amount

The withholding is the trap. The IRS example: a 42-year-old gets a $10,000 plan distribution, $2,000 is withheld, and $8,000 reaches the person. To roll over the whole $10,000 the person must find the $2,000 from other money within the 60 days. The $2,000 not rolled over is taxable income, and for someone under 59½ it may also carry a 10% additional tax on early distributions, per the IRS. For an IRA distribution, the IRS says the default withholding is 10%.

If you miss the 60 days, the IRS may waive the requirement when the deadline was missed because of circumstances beyond your control; ask a tax professional before relying on that.

Which accounts can roll over into a gold IRA?

A gold IRA is usually a traditional IRA, and some people use a Roth IRA. This is the IRS rollover chart for those two destinations:

Rolling from Into a traditional IRA Into a Roth IRA
Traditional IRA Yes (one rollover in any 12 months) Yes, and you must include it in income
Roth IRA No Yes (one rollover in any 12 months)
SEP IRA Yes (one rollover in any 12 months) Yes, and you must include it in income
SIMPLE IRA Yes, after two years (one rollover in any 12 months) Yes, after two years, and you must include it in income
401(k) or other qualified plan (pre-tax) Yes Yes, and you must include it in income
403(b) (pre-tax) Yes Yes, and you must include it in income
Governmental 457(b) Yes Yes, and you must include it in income
Roth 401(k), Roth 403(b) or Roth 457(b) No Yes

In short, Roth money can’t go into a traditional gold IRA, and pre-tax money rolled into a Roth IRA is taxed in the year of the rollover.

Some distributions can’t be rolled over at all, per the IRS: required minimum distributions, hardship distributions from an employer plan, periodic payments set up to last a lifetime or ten years or more, and corrective distributions of excess contributions.

Taxes and limits

What moving costs

A traditional-to-traditional rollover isn’t taxed, but the companies charge. One custodian that publishes its schedule, STRATA Trust Company, lists a $50 account setup fee (waived when opened electronically), and for taking money out later a $100 cash transfer out, $100 asset re-registration and a $250 account closure. Each metal purchase, sale or exchange is $40 more, and outgoing wires are $35. These are one company’s fees, not an average; the full table is in the custodian guide. The dealer’s markup over the spot price is separate and can be larger: gold IRA fees and scams.

Mistakes to avoid

Questions people ask

Can I roll over my 401(k) into a gold IRA while I still work there? The IRS pages we read don’t say. Your plan’s rules decide whether it allows payments to an IRA while you are employed, so ask the plan administrator.

Can I roll over gold I already own into an IRA? No. Contributions must be money, and property can’t be contributed. The IRA has to buy the metal itself.

Do I pay tax on a gold IRA rollover? Not on a traditional-to-traditional rollover. Rolling pre-tax money into a Roth IRA is taxable.

How long does a gold IRA rollover take? We found no IRS timeline. Ask both the sending plan and the new custodian for their expected days in writing.

Is a gold IRA rollover a good idea? That depends on your goals, your fees and your tax situation; this page doesn’t recommend it. Other ways to own gold: how to invest in gold.
